Are you someone who reads the instruction manual before you begin a project, or do you just jump right in and get started? If you’ve never used a certain tool before, the instructions will help you know how to use it efficiently for what it was designed to do, but unless it is plugged in or turned on, you won’t be able to use it for that purpose.
God’s Word is an instruction manual for us as we live our lives, but simply reading it isn’t enough. The Bible was written so that we could learn who God is, who we are, and what He has created us to do. God creates us anew in Jesus so we can do the good things He planned for us; we have to discover what those good things are, not just by reading the Bible but by applying it to our lives.
When we read the Bible, we’re gaining knowledge. There’s nothing wrong with having knowledge about Scripture, but we don’t need to stop there. We also have to put it into practice in our lives. The Holy Spirit will help us understand what God is saying in the Bible, but we have to be willing to listen. Not letting Him speak to us is like trying to use a vacuum without plugging it in—it’s not going to work!
Make sure you’re open to listening to what the Holy Spirit wants to teach you through what you’re reading. It might not be convenient or easy, but God loves us too much to not let us know when something is broken—but we have to be willing to see it. He accepts us as we are, but He also wants us to grow and mature as we walk through life with Him. Don’t stay unplugged. Get in the Word, learn the mission of God, listen to what the Spirit teaches you, and do what God has planned for you to do.
