Basketballs will go flat if left alone long enough. They need to be filled with air in order to do what they were designed to do. Like a basketball we’ve got to make sure that we are always filling up our lives so that we can live the way God intends for us to live. If we try to operate by our own spirit we’ll end up flat, but if we live by the Spirit of God, we’ll be full of air and be able to live out our God-given purpose.
First, get yourself a translation of the Bible that you understand. Almost all of the English versions that are being used today have about a 98% accuracy in their translations. That’s an amazing percentage! You don’t have to stick with a single version just because it’s what you’ve always read. I like to use the New Living Translation since it’s written in the English that we use today.
If you don’t have a Bible or can’t afford to buy a new one, there are plenty of free resources for you to take advantage of, such as BibleGateway.com or YouVersion for a smartphone.
Once you have a Bible you understand, spend time reading it! This doesn’t have to be just straight through from Genesis to Revelation. You can read about something you heard from someone else, the context around popular verses like John 3:16, or just about something that’s on your mind. God has given us His book so that we can understand and know Him more. It gives us air to encourage us as we live out our lives for His glory and purpose.
Pray often, and remember that prayer is just talking to God. The Creator of the universe wants to have a personal relationship with you, and that’s incredible! Galatians 4:6 says that God sent the Holy Spirit to us so that He can help us pray, so it’s okay if you don’t know what to pray about. Allow Him to teach you how to talk to God.
Don’t do life alone. Share with others what God is teaching you. Acts 1:8 says, “…you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” There is nothing better than being able to talk about the one who poured out love and grace on us.
None of these things can save you; only belief in what Jesus has done for you will do that. But they will help live you, the God-given you, and fulfill the purpose He has created you to do. Keep your eyes on what matters the most for all of eternity, and don’t let yourself become flat. If you’re a follower of Christ, you have the Holy Spirit inside of you. Listen to Him and let Him guide you so that you are always full of air and ready for whatever life throws your way.
