Matthew 5:17-20—“Don’t misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to accomplish their purpose. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not even the smallest detail of God’s law will disappear until its purpose is achieved.
“So if you ignore the least commandment and teach others to do the same, you will be called the least in the Kingdom of Heaven. But anyone who obeys God’s laws and teaches them will be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven.
“But I warn you—unless your righteousness is better than the righteousness of the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees, you will never enter the Kingdom of Heaven!”
The law of Moses is made up of the first five books of our Old Testament. It reflects the perfection of God, and shows us that there is no way we can ever measure up to God’s glorious standard on our own.
The writings of the prophets in the Old Testament point to the provision, power, and plan of God. They show us that God always has a plan in mind, that He is powerful over all things, and that He is the provider for His people.
In Matthew 5, Jesus wanted to make it clear that He wasn’t doing away with the law of Moses or the writing of the prophets. He didn’t come to erase all of that, but to be the foundational corner of humanity connecting them. It was always His plan to fulfill the perfection of God and the provision of God via the power of God. Our righteousness will never be enough on its own, but with Jesus, we are made new.
A cornerstone is the first stone set in the construction of a masonry foundation. It’s important because all the other stones will be set according to the cornerstone, so the cornerstone determines the position of the entire structure. Ephesians 2:20 says, “Together, we are his house, built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets. And the cornerstone is Christ Jesus himself.” God wants a people who build their lives on this cornerstone.
When Jesus is the cornerstone of everything we do, He holds the whole thing up. He sets the direction of His Church, and creates something spectacular out of us. Align your life with Christ by making Him your cornerstone, and do your part by working together with His people to show God to the world.
