If you ever colored in a coloring book when you were a child, you know that one of the first things you’re told is “Color inside the lines! Don’t go outside of the lines!”
We devote much of our lives to staying inside the lines—the cultural lines. Go to these places, hang out with these people, do these things. Don’t deviate from the norm. Instead of allowing God to work through us, we allow the lines of our culture to define and restrict us.
In John 4:1-8, Jesus defied the lines of the culture He was living in. Jews of that time would travel all the way around Samaria, rather than go through it. But Jesus saw a different picture. He was willing to go outside the lines in order to reach the Samaritan woman in John 4. Jesus met her where she was, even though that caused Him to cross the lines of the culture, because He wanted her life to be changed.
