Captive Thoughts

Have you ever been awake at night, unable to go to sleep? A lot of the time, our sleepless nights come from the videos we play in our heads while we’re trying to get to sleep. Our culture is fast-paced and hectic. The endless stimulation we have at our fingertips sometimes causes us to not rest properly, but rest is crucial to productivity and quality of life. Other times, we lie in bed at night and come up with all kinds of “What ifs” to ask ourselves. We analyze our day, worry about tomorrow, wonder if we made the right decisions, said the right things, did what we were supposed to do. What if I forgot to do this? What if this person finds out that I did this? What if I lose my job?

The Bible has a lot to say about the way we should think. 2 Corinthians 10:5 says that we should “…take every thought captive to obey Christ.” Romans 12:2 says “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think…” Philippians 4:8 says to think about things that are true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, admirable, and excellent and worthy of praise.

Physical, mental, and emotional rest all start with a secure spiritual foundation in Jesus. Real rest starts with a spiritual freedom, and an understanding that no matter what happens, you are going to be secure.
