Matthew 7:9-11—“You parents—if your children ask for a loaf of bread, do you give them a stone instead? Or if they ask for a fish, do you give them a snake? Of course not! So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him.”
It is not okay to stay the same. Our Heavenly Father has provided us with gifts to help us not just begin the race, but to finish it and finish it well. Not including forgiveness, spiritual gifts, and natural talents, God gives us three major gifts. Never refuse to use the good gifts of God in your life because they have been misused and abused by the world. They are still good gifts that help us develop into who God wants us to be.
1. The Bible
2 Timothy 3:16-17—“All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.”
Our culture has made the Bible out to be an ancient book of stories that is irrelevant to life in modern times. The truth is that the Bible is God’s Word. It’s a timeless truth, and is definitely relevant and practical today. The Bible is all about Jesus, and it tells us how to live life in Him. The Bible isn’t a suggestion book, its a success manual!
2. The Holy Spirit
John 14:27—“But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.”
John 16:8-11—“And when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment. The world’s sin is that it refuses to believe in me. Righteousness is available because I go to the Father, and you will see me no more. Judgment will come because the ruler of this world has already been judged.”
The Holy Spirit is the third Person in the Trinity—He is just as much God as Jesus or the Father is, not some mystical force, power, or warm and fuzzy feeling. The world has made Him out to be weird, so those who have Him are seen as weird, too. But the Holy Spirit is anything but weird; He is great! He brings conviction to the world and coaching to the believer. Before we were saved, we were spiritually dead, but through the Holy Spirit we are made spiritually alive, and when our spirit is alive, we are eternally secure in God.
3. The Church
1 Corinthians 12:27—“All of you together are Christ’s body, and each of you is a part of it.”
1 Corinthians 12:7—“A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other.”
The Church is something you are a part of, not some place you go on the weekend. It is not a building, a social organization, or a civic club. The people who make up the church—the body of Christ—are people who have been salvaged by God to change the world! A people, in a people, to change a people. In Romans 1 Paul says, “When we get together, I want to encourage you in your faith, but I also want to be encouraged by yours.”
Culture makes church seem like a prison, a place where you’re given a list of do’s and don’ts, but when believers gather, we are to motivate, encourage, and challenge one another. God gives each member of the body of Christ spiritual gifts to help them do just that.
God is a good Father! He gives incredible gifts to His children to help them become great.
