Hebrews 10:24—“Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works.”
1 Corinthians 2:9—“…‘No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him.’”
The enemy wants us to be shortsighted. He wants us to focus on earthly goals instead of eternal goals, and we easily take the bait. Our human minds can’t even begin to comprehend how long eternity is. He ruins our appetite by filling us up with microwave meals when there is an incredible feast waiting for us later on.
The Bible says that we are to motivate each other to love others and do good works. God promises rewards for believers who are faithful stewards of what we have been given here on Earth. Salvation is a gift that we can’t earn; we gain entrance into the kingdom through Jesus alone. But God’s mission for us once we are saved is to share Jesus with people who don’t know Him. Then we can earn our eternal inheritance in the kingdom—not entrance into the kingdom.
God will reward believers with words of affirmation. If you are a faithful steward on Earth, you will hear from the mouth of Christ, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.” Instead of focusing on receiving affirmation from those around you, look for affirmation from the One who created you.
God will also give tangible gifts in heaven. In John 14, Jesus says, “In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.” In Matthew 6:19-20, He says, “Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal.”
Some believers will be given crowns in heaven. The Crown of Life will be given to believers who endure testing and tempting, and the Crown of Righteousness will be given to those who practice discipline in our corrupted world. Believers who are serious about God’s mission to share the Good News with others will receive the Crown of Rejoicing. The Crown of Glory will be given to those who humbly serve in their position in ministry. This isn’t an exhaustive list, but just some of the tangible ways God will reward those who are faithful to their calling.
Many believers don’t realize that there will be position, rank, and order in the heavenly kingdom just as there is in earthly kingdoms. Jesus says in Matthew 18 that those who humbly come to Him like children and who help others understand how to enter the kingdom will be great in heaven. Earthly power won’t matter in heaven; it’s those who live life on Earth with a heavenly heart who will receive eternal rewards.
Luke 16:9—“…Use your worldly resources to benefit others and make friends. Then, when your earthly possessions are gone, they will welcome you to an eternal home.”
Whether we are faithful on Earth will determine the level of our fellowship with the King in heaven. Hebrews 3:14 says, “For if we are faithful to the end, trusting God just as firmly as when we first believed, we will share in all that belongs to Christ.” All believers will be under the leadership of Jesus, and we will be in His presence, but the time spent with the King will be determined by how faithful we were on Earth with what He gave us.
Many people will never receive the gift of salvation because they run after it, trying to earn it on their own. Believers know that there is nothing we can do to earn salvation. Instead of running after the gift, we should be running after the rewards that the gift offers. Leverage your gift of salvation so that others will hear the Good News, and so that God will reward you in heaven with treausres that will last for eternity.
