Ephesians 2:18-22—Now all of us can come to the Father through the same Holy Spirit because of what Christ has done for us. So now you Gentiles are no longer strangers and foreigners. You are citizens along with all of God’s holy people. You are members of God’s family. Together, we are his house, built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets. And the cornerstone is Christ Jesus himself. We are carefully joined together in him, becoming a holy temple for the Lord. Through him you Gentiles are also being made part of this dwelling where God lives by his Spirit.

In Matthew 5:17, during the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus said, “Don’t misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to accomplish their purpose.” The purpose of the law of Moses was to show us that we have missed and have a need, and the writings of the prophets point to God’s provision and power, and His plan for His people.

Ephesians 2 calls Jesus the cornerstone. The definition of a cornerstone is “the first stone set in the construction of a masonry foundation, important since all other stones will be set in reference to this stone, thus determining the position of the entire structure.” Jesus came to be what the law of Moses and the writings of the prophets pointed towards. He came to be our righteousness and fulfill the need that the law of Moses shows us we have. If we align ourselves with Jesus—the cornerstone—we can have a life that displays God to the rest of the world.

The Church is the building and Jesus is the cornerstone that we have to align ourselves with. He builds us higher than we could ever build ourselves. We have to rest upon and line up with our cornerstone so that we can be a light to the world. This is the second part of the Ministry Multiplication Cycle that Jesus showed to us—first bring people in, and then build them up and help them establish their identity in Christ.

Jesus is the one who holds the whole Church up. He is the strength of our building, and by aligning ourselves with Him and helping others to do the same, we will continue to add to its height. Jesus came to be the foundational corner of humanity. When we join together and align ourselves with Him we can do something great!

  1. This teaching and illustration of the strength and power of Jesus as our cornerstone reminds me of how critically important it is that we each do our part to align ourselves with Christ and encourage each other in the process.
