Ephesians 2:8-10—God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.
Entrance into the Kingdom of God is a gift from Jesus. There’s nothing we can do to earn our way in. However, God doesn’t want us to just enter His Kingdom; He wants us to maximize our life for the Kingdom. He gives us goals to work toward while we’re here on the Earth and a snapshot of what is to come in all of eternity.
This snapshot can motivate us as believers to participate in Christ’s mission and be rewarded for it in the future. But in order to do that, we can’t be short-sighted. We have to remember that there is a life after this temporary one. Jesus talked a lot about rewards while He was on Earth to encourage us to live Christ-centered lives here on Earth, and by obeying Him we can reap the benefits of that life for eternity.
1 Corinthians 5:8-11—Yes, we are fully confident, and we would rather be away from these earthly bodies, for then we will be at home with the Lord. So whether we are here in this body or away from this body, our goal is to please him. For we must all stand before Christ to be judged. We will each receive whatever we deserve for the good or evil we have done in this earthly body. Because we understand our fearful responsibility to the Lord, we work hard to persuade others. God knows we are sincere, and I hope you know this, too.
How we participate in His mission determines our eternal responsibility and reward. As followers of Christ we have been called to tell others about Jesus so that they can be reconciled to Him. We are to invest and steward what we have been given for the purpose of reaching out to the peoples of the Earth, telling them the Good News, and equipping them to do the same.
Jesus said in Matthew 6:19-20, “Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal.” What we have on Earth will fade away; we can’t take it with us to heaven. But what God has in store for those who obey His calling is amazing and will never fade!
Leverage what you have so that as many people can hear the Gospel as possible. We never know whether tomorrow we’ll be on Earth or in heaven, so elevate your thinking. You don’t want to miss out on eternal rewards because you were short-sighted. Train yourself to act as though eternity will happen tomorrow. Leverage it all today!
